Il traditore all’interno della scuola non era un semplice sorvegliante o un tecnico informatico. Era il Vicepreside in persona, l’uomo che per anni aveva incassato cospicue mazzette sottobanco dai genitori benestanti di quelle ragazze per insabbiare ogni abuso, ogni denuncia e ogni lacrima versata dalle loro vittime. Quando mio padre scoprì i trasferimenti bancari illegali e i filmati cancellati dal server centrale — che fortunatamente il sistema di backup criptato dell’ufficio di presidenza aveva salvato — il vaso di Pandora si scoperchiò definitivamente.

Ma la storia non si concluse con un semplice provvedimento disciplinare. Sentendosi ancora intoccabili grazie al potere economico delle proprie famiglie, i genitori di Beatrice — la leader del gruppo che mi aveva versato il secchio d’acqua sporca sulla testa — pretesero una riunione d’urgenza straordinaria. Entrarono nell’istituto con la boria tipica dei potenti, scortati dai loro avvocati di grido e pronti a pretendere le mie scuse ufficiali.

“Lei non sa con chi ha a che fare, Preside,” ruggì il padre di Beatrice, un noto e spietato magnate dell’edilizia, sbattendo con forza i pugni sul tavolo in noce della sala riunioni. “Un semplice dipendente pubblico come lei non si permette di minacciare mia figlia! Cancelli immediatamente qualsiasi nota sul registro, distrugga quei video e licenzi il personale della sicurezza. In caso contrario, entro stasera userò tutte le mie conoscenze per farla rimuovere dal suo incarico e ridurrò la sua vita e quella di questa scuola in macerie!”

Le ragazze sedevano accanto ai loro genitori sfoggiando un sorriso arrogante e vittorioso. Erano convinte che i soldi e le minacce avrebbero spazzato via la verità, proprio come avevano sempre fatto in passato. Beatrice mi guardò di traverso con occhi colmi di disprezzo, convinta che fossi ancora una preda indifesa.

Ciò che la loro cieca arroganza non aveva minimamente previsto era la vera identità di mio padre.

Mio padre non era un semplice preside precario. Era il maggior azionista e il fondatore della fondazione privata che possedeva l’intero complesso scolastico, un uomo d’affari immensamente facoltoso che aveva scelto di dirigere personalmente l’istituto solo per stare vicino a me dopo la scomparsa di mia madre. Ma, soprattutto, mio padre non aveva alcuna intenzione di gestire la questione tra le mura di quella stanza.

Senza dire una sola parola, mio padre premé un pulsante sul telecomando del proiettore.
